Programming the Brain’s Filter: How Your Mind Spotlights Opportunity
To the skeptics, the Law of Attraction can sound like “woo-woo” mysticism. However, the practical results of the Law of Attraction are closely aligned with established psychological principles, most notably the function of the Reticular Activating System (RAS).
The RAS is a network of neurons in your brainstem that acts as a sophisticated filter. In any given moment, your brain is bombarded with millions of bits of sensory information. To prevent overload, the RAS filters out nearly everything, only allowing information that it deems vital or relevant to pass through to your conscious mind. Your RAS decides what you notice and what you ignore.
You can consciously program your RAS filter. A classic example is deciding to buy a specific model of a car, and suddenly seeing that car everywhere. The car was always there, but your RAS was filtering it out. When you focus on a goal, practice visualization, and write down your intentions, you are giving your RAS a new instruction: “This is now relevant to me; show me more of this.”
Suddenly, your brain begins to spot the Serendipitous headlines, the unexpected resources, or the key person in a crowd who can help you achieve your desire. Manifestation, in this context, is the psychological act of training your brain to become hyper-aware of the existing opportunities that align with your new, dominant focus.
